Preparing for a Data Science Leap: Camille Buan's FTW Journey

Embarking on a transformative journey toward a career switch requires not only determination but also a supportive ecosystem. Camille Buan, the promising Gamechanger awardee from the GCash x FTW Data Science Scholarship Program Batch 8, shares her insights into the pivotal role FTW Foundation played as she prepares to transition into the dynamic field of Data Science. In this Q&A, Camille recounts the profound impact of FTW's structured learning, mentorship, and community support, shedding light on how these elements collectively shaped her readiness for the upcoming shift in her career.

1. How did FTW help you prepare for your career switch?

The impact of the FTW Foundation on my career transition was profound. Having a credible organization and outstanding mentors supporting and helping me achieve my goal of switching careers to Data Science was a unique experience. The structured learning approach and mentorship provided me with the knowledge and guidance I needed to navigate and learn the complexities of Data Science. The supportive community presented opportunities for networking and sharing experiences, creating a valuable support system for me. As a result, I gained confidence in my capabilities, further honed my skills, and am now ready to jumpstart my career in Data Science.

FTW really prepared me by providing an intensive training program that not only cultivates and teaches technical skills but also soft skills. They also helped me become more confident in my skills and capabilities by providing free and comprehensive resources and encouraging words to keep me going that really helped me in my learning journey. Lastly, the solid community, you will never ever feel alone in the program as you are surrounded by supportive TAs, mentors, instructors, previous scholars, and of course, your fellow scholars who share the same goals as you.

2. Which part of the program was most helpful to you?

During my FTW training, it wasn't just the structured program and free resources alone that helped me in my learning journey; it was also the presence of people around me especially during the group activities that truly shaped my experience.

Learning with other people who share the same goals as you do is very different compared to learning on your own. I appreciate how FTW also prioritizes the building of relationships among us, creating a more relaxed and friendly environment while learning. Also, how FTW grouped us with different people each week, allowing me to get closer to each of my classmates in the training program.

Surrounded by a community of dedicated people trying to make a career switch, I realized that the people around me played a vital role as well in not just surviving and finishing the program but also thriving within it. The teamwork and group activities really helped me grow and learn from my co-scholars. And one of my most memorable experiences at FTW was the capstone project. I enjoy being part of my group and learning from each other. Indeed teamwork makes the dream work.

3. What’s your favorite thing about FTW?

When I was just studying Data Science by myself, I was uncertain if any company would bat an eye on my resume/CV or be willing to hire me. I lacked confidence in my skills and knowledge, had no credible organization to support me, and had no strong connections in the community. I knew that I needed to at least venture out and find a company that offers internships just to get experience or apply for scholarships to gain proper training as the market is getting very competitive.

That's why my favorite thing about FTW is the community that this foundation has been building for years. I love how passionate they are in helping career shifters like us. I appreciate how FTW connects us to the data science community! Our instructors and mentors, thriving in their careers, provide a valuable network for us scholars (which I am very grateful for). They are the people whom I never imagined having interactions with because they are already at the top of their careers.

Furthermore, I have noticed that everyone at FTW Foundation is committed and passionate about helping and supporting us on our journey which inspires and motivates me to also extend a helping hand to those who are also trying to shift careers because I know how hard and lonely the journey could be. The networks, skills, and knowledge I developed during the program are invaluable, and I hope the next batch of scholars will have a similar or even better experience!

A quote that says, “That’s why my favorite thing about FTW is the community that this foundation has been building for years. I love how passionate they are in helping career shifters like us.”
